Church of the Cross is a growing community of faith where Jesus Christ changes lives.
We welcome the Holy Spirit so all will discover their God-given gifts and delight in sharing the love of Christ in the community and the world. Grace so pervades the atmosphere of the church that questions, doubts and fears can be honestly expressed and every person is loved, respected, nurtured and celebrated.
Rev. Gustavus Olatungie Christo-Baker (Gus) comes to COTC from First United Methodist Church in Van Wert, Ohio. He was born on April 12, 1954, in Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa. Gus came to the United States six years after his Ordination to attend the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, where he received two degrees, a Master of Arts in Christian Education in 1988 and a Master of Theological Studies in 1989. His plans to return to Sierra Leone after graduation were derailed by civil war in that country.
Prior to his tenure at First UMC, Gus served the Scott Trinity/Union United Methodist Charge, near Sandusky, for 16 years, followed by 7 years with the Marne United Methodist Church, in Newark, Ohio. Since 2011, Gus has served as the Senior Pastor at First UMC in Van Wert.
Gus is a fan of soccer (Manchester United), baseball (New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians), and collegiate football (The Ohio State University Buckeyes!).
Pastor Gus’ first Sunday at COTC will be July 1st.
Pastor John Leaving after 23 Years of Service to COTC
Pastor John has been appointed to serve at Shiloh UMC in Delhi, Ohio, near Cincinnati. His last Sunday with us is June 24. Please plan to be with us in worship at 11:00 a.m. that day as we say farewell to Pastor John and his family.
The United Methodist Church is a connectional church. This means we share funds and leaders. This means we struggle with differences of culture and opinion. Like the early church we want to be wise as we face things that challenge our covenant together. We do not want to lose our connection to Christ and his church.
2018 VBS - June 18-22
Are you interested in volunteering with VBS? It's a really great way to interact with kids and teach them about Jesus. A lot of the kids that come to COTC VBS do not have Jesus in their lives on a regular basis so the week they spend here is really important.
There are Crew Leader and Assistant Crew Leader positions available. Also any child who will be in 6th Grade in the 2018-2019 school year is welcome to come be a "Leader in Training."
See Ministries>Children's Ministries>Vacation Bible School for more information on VBS.
Sunday sermons are now available as podcasts. You can subscribe through the iTunes Store or the RSS link on the Worship Podcast page of this website.
You can query the sermon podcasts for particular topics such as "faith" or "salvation" or "fear" or "hope"? Scroll to the bottom of the Worship Podcast page and search for your topic of choice. It may take a minute, but a list of podcasts on that topic will appear (as well as other references throughout the website).
